Bloxsome, Herbert Schreiber (1876 - 1952)
He was born on the Isle of Wight, England on 19 November 1876 and died in Toowoomba, Qld, on 28 January 1952.
He migrated to the Winton district. Queensland, and was a jackeroo there until he
purchased a property in the Malakoff area.
He was married in 1909.
From the Malakoil area, he
moved to the Burnett area and
in 1912 he purchased Delubra
station and there laid the
foundation of what is now a
first quality Aberdeen Angus
stud property.
"On his Delubra properly the
late Mr. Bloxsome made a
study of nature and artificial
grasses, and had over 100 varieties to which he could give
the correct nomenclature.
He made a study of early
aboriginal names and could
entertain for many hours on
that subject."
Obituary, Maryborough Chronicle
During the world-wide influenza epidemic which followed the war, Dr Thomas Bancroft was inoculating people in the area and noticed a 'yellow-jacketed' tree which he considered was an unnamed species. He asked Bloxsome to send material to J. H. Maiden - comprehensive specimens were sent over a period of about four years, when Maiden considered that the status of the tree had been established and he published the description. Bloxsome at first declined to accept the honour of having the species named after him, suggesting that the name of Dr Bancroft should be honoured, but on Maiden pointing out that a number of plants had been so named, Bloxsome consented to his name being used.
Eucalyptus bloxsomei was published by Maiden (1926),
now known as Corymbia bloxsomei (Maiden) K.D.Hill & L.A.S.Johnson
